The Foreign Medical Graduate Exam (FMGE) online form application will be out in May 2024. It is the only medical graduate exam that is mandatory to obtain a medical license and to take PG admission in India. National Board Examination is a prime body that conducts FMGE exam. Soon, it will be replaced by the “NEXT” exam.
Foreign medical graduates (FMGs) in India will soon be able to take the FMGE exam twice a year, in June and December, instead of just once in December. This is a welcome move that will bring much relief to FMGs, who have long been demanding this change.
The FMGE exam is a mandatory screening test for Indian citizens and overseas citizens of India (OCIs) who have completed their medical education abroad and wish to practice medicine in India. Passing the FMGE exam is a prerequisite for obtaining a permanent registration from the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The FMGE is a difficult exam, but it is not impossible for MBBS students from abroad to clear it. It can be true that the pass rate for FMGE is low, but it has been increasing in recent years. In 2021, 23.83% of foreign medical graduates cleared the FMGE, up from 14.68% in 2020.
However it also depends on the medical institution as well. The maximum number of students who sit to apply for this exam makes it a bit harder but not impossible to clear it. The difficulty of the FMGE also depends on the medical institution from which a student has graduated. Some medical institutions provide better education than others, and their students are more likely to be successful on the FMGE.
Therefore, it is important to choose a medical institution carefully. However, if you are unable to meet the medical cutoff in India, Russia is a prime choice due to its reputation as a medical education hub and subsidized fee structure. And, the country has a greater FMGE passing rate as well.
Examination pattern: The FMGE is a computer-based test (CBT) with 300 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The questions are divided into three sections:
Passing marks: To pass the FMGE, you must score at least 50% marks in each section and an overall score of at least 50%.
Registration: The online registration for FMGE 2024 is expected to start in December 2023. The exam is likely to be held in June 2024.
Why is there a requirement to conduct FMGE exam in India and why is it going to replace it with the NEXT exam?
The FMGE was introduced in 2002 to ensure that FMGs have the minimum required knowledge and skills to practice medicine in India. The exam is based on the Indian medical curriculum, and it covers a wide range of subjects, including pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical subjects.
There are a number of reasons why the Indian government requires FMGs to pass the FMGE before they can practice medicine in India. One reason is to ensure the quality of medical care in the country. India has a large shortage of doctors, and the government relies on FMGs to fill this gap. However, the government also wants to ensure that FMGs have the same level of training and skills as Indian medical graduates.
