History of NEET Exam

Has it ever occurred to you to know that What is the History of NEET Exam? How this elite exam came into existence. If this question crosses your mind, then we have the answer. The story goes back to the year of 2010, when NMC (National Medical Commission) earlier known as MCI, introduced the Gazette of India. This official notification was received as a shock by the whole medical aspirants community. As, it contained information regarding the new modifications for the introduction of the NEET, a single entrance exam. It was something new that everyone was going to witness.

The changes were made in the -

Regulation on Graduate Medical Education, 1997.

And, this new modification was introduced as an amendment and it is known as - Regulation on Graduate Medical Education, 2010. This new change was unexpected and unprepared for the medical aspirants. All the amendments and the introduction of the new gazette were made to introduce the single eligibility entrance test - NEET.

NEET replaced AIPMT (All India Pre Medical Test), a landmark moment in medical entrance exams. In 2012, the Supreme Court gave his consent for the NEET exam to get “MBBS admission in India” and for the first time it was conducted in the year 2013.

But, many states opposed the NEET exam due to its syllabus, which differed greatly from their own medical syllabus. It was the prime reason that the NEET exam was not conducted in the years of 2014 and 2015. In these two years AIPMT was still being conducted, NEET was on halt for the inspection by the Supreme Court.

Due to the continuous opposition by states on 18th July 2013, the exam was canceled. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of states and disallowed MCI to conduct the NEET exam and said it would interfere and affect the hegemony of the admission process of the medical colleges.

But, MCI did not lose hope and yet again filed the case and achieved success in 2016. And, since then NEET continues to be held all over INDIA as a medical entrance exam test to get admission in AIIMS, MBBS and BDS.

Details of NEET Exam in 2016

NEET was held in two phases in 2016, on May 1 and July 24. The exam pattern and syllabus for NEET 2016 were the same as for AIPMT 2015. The paper had 180 questions, each worth 4 marks. All questions were objective type with a single correct answer. There were 45 questions from Physics and Chemistry each, and 90 questions from Biology (Zoology and Botany sections).
